What is a system boiler?

System boilers heat water and store it in a hot water cylinder, so there’s enough hot water for when multiple taps and showers are used at the same time. The cylinder is often installed in a convenient location like your airing cupboard. Our Worcester Bosch system boilers are usually installed in homes with more than one bathroom.

Why choose a system boiler?

Save valuable space

There’s no need for a water storage tank in the loft, making system boilers a good choice if you have limited space or if you’re planning a loft conversion.

How is a system boiler different from others?

There are three types of boiler – combi, system and regular:

  • Regular boilers rely on a cold water tank kept in the loft. A heat exchanger heats the water, which is then pumped to and stored in a cylinder ready to be used.
  • System boilers take water directly from the mains, heats water by a built-in heat exchanger, and stores hot water in a cylinder. They do not need a storage tank in the loft.
  • Combi boilers do not have a tank in the loft or cylinder for storage of water. Water is taken directly from the mains and hot water is ready on demand i.e. when you switch your shower on.

How does a system boiler work?

In a system boiler, water comes directly from the mains, is heated in a built-in heat exchanger and then stored in a hot water cylinder ready to be distributed to your taps and shower when needed.

What size system boiler do I need?

The size of a system boiler you need depends on the number of rooms, bathrooms, radiators and hot water taps running at the same time in your home.

If you have one to two bedrooms you will most likely need a boiler between 12-28 kWs. If you have three to four bedrooms you will need a boiler between 18-35 kWs. Each radiator in your house ads an extra 1-2 kWs. Find out more about what size boiler you need.

Which is better, combi or system boiler?

Systems boilers are well suited for large and busy homes with a high demand of hot water (more than two taps running at the same time). System boilers are also better suited for areas with low water pressure.

On the other hand, combi boilers  are well fit for small to medium households with no more than two hot water taps running at the same time and limited space

When it comes to boilers there isn't a 'one size fits all' solution. The type of a boiler you need depends on your current boiler, and number of rooms and radiators in your home and water pressure in your area. When you buy a boiler will we take this into account and provide boiler options suited to you and your home's needs. You can book a call with our heating experts who can help findthe best boiler for your home.
