Smart meter questions

What is a smart meter and how does it work?

A smart meter is an intelligent electricity meter that enables two way communications between your business and your energy supplier. Using electronic communications technology, like the SIM card in your mobile phone, it talks to us remotely, to send us accurate meter readings and electricity usage details.

Will my smart meter still work if I move energy supplier?

You’ll be free to move energy supplier at any time and we’ll do everything we can to ensure you continue to receive the benefits of smart metering. However, this service may be limited or a new supplier may not support smart meters.

Will the meter change affect my bills?

No, the price you pay for your electricity won’t change. However, your bills will be more accurate. When our engineer installs your smart meter, they’ll simply record the final reading on your old meter and take an opening reading from the new meter. There’ll be a smooth transition and your next bill will show two sets of readings.

I’ve been told I can’t have a smart meter yet. Why’s this?

We run a personal eligibility check when you go to book your smart meter appointment to see if we can install a smart meter at your business. Whilst we continue to roll out our smart meters across Great Britain, some restrictions may apply, such as smart is not available if you just get your gas from us or if there is no signal in your area.

How can my business be more energy efficient?

We’ve put together some easy measures that any business can use to become more energy efficient.

  • Encourage feedback from staff. Get them to report draughts, or if they're too cold or too hot. This'll hopefully reduce the amount of people who open windows or use additional small heaters
  • Turn off your equipment. Make sure all members of staff turn off their equipment at the end of the day. Not only will it save on energy costs, but it'll also lower cooling costs and extend the life of the. A single computer left on 24 hours a day costs around £45 per year
  • By equipment using something as simple as light switch stickers allows everyone to feel confident that they're turning off the right light. The Carbon Trust website also has printable posters and labels you can use. Alternatively, using light timers to match working hours or occupancy of the space allows it to be automated, so you don’t have to rely on others to keep the lights off
  • When buying new equipment, think about energy efficiency ratings and not just the initial cost. Always buy equipment rated at least A+.

Do I have to have a smart meter?

No, it’s up to you but we’ll install it for free and it could help you save money on your energy. The sooner you have your smart meter installed, the sooner your business can start benefiting from the benefits they offer.

Will you keep my business information safe?

Yes. Your meter readings and any other information about your business that our engineer collects during the installation process will be stored securely and won’t be released to any third parties.

How much will a smart meter cost?

There is no cost for having a smart meter installed.
