Decarbonising Sheffield

How we're helping Sheffield reduce carbon emissions for a cleaner energy future.

Counting down to a zero carbon Yorkshire

Blackburn Meadows is our biomass-fuelled combined heat and power plant in Sheffield. It produces enough electricity to power the equivalent of around 69,000 homes1 while at the same time recycling 200,000 tonnes of waste wood, sourced within the UK, that would have otherwise gone to landfill. It also reduces carbon emissions by up to 65% when compared to natural gas, providing heat to businesses, including IKEA UK, Forgemasters' and Ice Sheffield and Sheffield Arena. Across Yorkshire, we’ve also installed electric vehicle charging solutions for Kirklees Council and Leeds Railway Station. Plus, we’ll be making Sheffield homes more energy efficient through the Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery scheme, saving over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 each year2

Together we can take action and tackle climate change.

Let’s not waste energy

We're committed to developing sustainable energy solutions to help progress the UK's net zero carbon journey. Our biomass CHP plant at Blackburn Meadows uses recycled waste wood from across the UK to power nearby homes and businesses. The site is constantly evolving and has LED street lights, electric vehicle chargers in the carpark and is installing solar PV panels to power the control room.

Energy efficient homes in Sheffield

In 2022, Sheffield City Council were awarded a Government grant to help make local homes warmer and more energy efficient. We've been working with them to carry out the Green Homes Grant scheme across Sheffield, helping to save over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 each year2 whilst keeping the homes of Sheffield warm.

The scheme offered free installation of insulation, double-glazing, smart heating controls and solar panels to eligible households before March 31st 2022.
