Saving 830 tonnes of carbon at Diageo

One of the largest solar arrays of its type in Scotland

Diageo are a global leader in the alcoholic beverage manufacturing industry packaging more than 40 million cases of premium spirits each year, including Johnnie Walker, Gordon’s and Tanqueray. We partnered with Emtec energy to install 7,700 solar panels on a vacant patch of land at Diageo’s 150-acre plant in Leven, Fife. This solar farm will provide renewable energy for the site at Diageo in Leven, Fife, generating 22% of the sites annual electricity needs rising to 60% during the summer months.

How solar is powering huge carbon savings

Generating enough energy to power 2,500 homes

The solar farm, which is the size of 8 football pitches will produce a massive 4.2MW of electricity to power the Leven packaging plant. That's enough to power 2500 homes for a year.

Reducing electricity demand by 3.9GWh/year

The site uses approximately 22GWh/year of electricity and 32GWh/year of gas, the ground mount solar array will reduce the site imported electricity demand by 3.9GWh/year.

A giant leap towards net zero

This major energy efficiency project will support Diageo’s ambitions to be carbon neutral by 2026, reducing 50% of carbon emissions at their sites and using renewable electricity to power all direct operations by 2030.

“It’s fantastic to make this project a reality, creating a more resilient and energy-efficient plant. Working in partnership with E.ON, the solar array will generate nearly a quarter of our annual energy use and is a fantastic step forward towards meeting our net zero commitments. We’ll continue to invest in projects like this one to improve our impact on the environment and future-proof our operations.

Solar is just the start...

Between nPower Business Solutions and E.ON, we've been working at Diageo sites for over 10 years. We not only installed this solar array, we also worked with them and Emtec to provide a Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) and funding options for the project.

And it doesn't end there. We're committed to helping Diageo become a more sustainable business by identifying and delivering future energy efficiency solutions including further solar installations and commercial heat pumps.

How we made this solar farm a reality...

Net zero

Delivering on net zero commitments

As part of Diageo’s Society 2030 commitment, they aim to be carbon neutral by 2030, having already reduced their operational carbon emissions by 50%. This commercial solar project supports their ambitious 10-year sustainability action plan and they've even commissioned a new mural, at the Leven site designed to give passers-by an insight into the factory and publicly reinforce its commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

We're continuing to support Diageo with additional energy efficiency solutions projects that support our mutual drive for a more sustainable future.

We have decades of experience in delivering affordable and sustainable solutions that help businesses reduce their carbon emissions. With our partners Emtec we're ideally placed to help Diageo in their ambitions to create a more sustainable business, as well as showing employees and customers the tangible changes they are making in the face of the climate emergency.
