Leigh Sports Village Stadium

We delivered energy independence and cost savings in record time to help Leigh become the first UK stadium to be 100% LED.

Getting pitch ready

When the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 matches were televised in July of 2022, culminating in the amazing win for the Lionesses. In the run up to the final, some of the amazing football action was broadcast from Leigh Sports Village Stadium in Greater Manchester.

To get Leigh fighting fit and ready for kick-off, there was some intense behind the scenes activity to get the stadium powered up with low-carbon energy. Leigh Sports Village is Wigan Council's largest single energy consumer, so big changes had to be made to reduce its energy use. In record time, E.ON Energy Solutions installed a new 200-kilowatt PV array that powers and illuminates almost 2,000 newly installed low-energy LED light fittings. At the time, not only was excitement building for the games ahead, but there was an enormous buzz around the sports village because the council really needed to optimise the power for the 12,000-capacity stadium with energy-efficient solar power, ready for the event. An additional 153-watt array at a neighbouring leisure centre completed the system.

In pursuit of net zero...

Carbon savings

Installing the solar array is saving Leigh Sports Village a staggering 95 tonnes of CO2 a year

100% LED

Swapping the old fluorescent lighting to LED has saved £200k, or 750,000 kilowatts a year, in energy savings

The solar array will take the complex a long way towards being energy self-sufficient. We also have scope to export any additional power we don’t use.

Savings that just can't be ignored

Both venues use a large amount of energy, with the leisure centre running pool heating and temperature control via a CHP system for 93+ hours a day, seven days a week. This was an ideal opportunity to optimise and decarbonise these venues through low-carbon technologies such as commercial solar panels, LED lighting, and industrial heat pumps.

Exchanging the old fluorescent lighting to LED is saving around £200k, or 750,000 kilowatts a year, in energy costs across the Leigh Sports Village complex, which, as well as a leisure centre, includes offices, education classrooms, an NHS facility, and a pharmacy. Great success through challenging times

Due to the impacts of COVID, there were global shortages of PV panel components and LED light fittings, as well as very long lead times from most contractors, along with strict deadlines for using Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) funding. There had been a national problem, with many councils and other public sector organisations having to return PSDS grants for projects that couldn’t be delivered within the required timescales.

But through the council’s energy supply framework with YPO and npower Business Solutions, E.ON Energy Solutions was able to take on the project for Wigan Council at short notice and successfully source the necessary materials to deliver the full installation within the 3-month deadline.

At the beginning of the year, our customers at Leigh Sports Village didn’t believe this project was achievable in such tight timeframes, but E.ON Energy Solutions came through with flying colours.

Setting Leigh up for success

E.ON knew that the sports village had to continue to be operational throughout the installation of the solar array and the LED lighting. So planning and flexibility were at the core of this project to make sure the staff and customers of the complex were safe and could continue about their business without any disruption. The project was completed in record time, ready for the Women’s Euro tournament to start in July, much to the delight of the council and the patrons of the sports village.
