Applications for the Warm Home Discount Scheme are now open

Fill out our application form to see if you're eligible

We’re serious about helping our customers reduce their energy bills, particularly those in fuel poverty. One of the ways we can do this is through the Warm Home Discount Scheme, where we’re able to offer eligible customers a discount on their winter electricity bills.

We've included some answers to questions we thought you may have about the scheme below, including who might be eligible.

If you're receiving the Guarantee element of Pension Credit you may receive the Warm Home Discount automatically, please see the questions and answers below for further information.

As we deal with applications on a "first come, first served" basis, we wouldn't want you to miss out so please complete our online form.

Who automatically gets the discount?

We share information with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). For the 2018/19 Warm Home Discount scheme we'll use information given to us by the DWP to automatically give the discount to customers who had their electricity supplied by us on 8 July 2018 and were:

  • Aged under 65 and receiving only the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (no Savings Credit)
  • Aged 65 or over and receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, (even if you receive Savings Credit as well)
  • Customers who are automatically eligible for a Warm Home Discount are known as the "Core Group". If you fall into this group you don't need to fill in an application form to receive your discount.

The DWP will have written to you from October 2018 to let you know if you qualify. We also write to you when the payment has been made.

If you're in this group and weren't supplied by us on 8 July 2018, your old supplier will be responsible for giving you the discount.

You need to be the named account holder, or the partner of the named account holder to receive the Warm Home Discount.

When will the discount be paid?

The intention of the discount is to help customers with their winter electricity bill and so customers who've been accepted for the payment in 2018/19 will receive their discount by March 2019.

I think I’m automatically entitled to the discount but haven’t heard anything from the DWP

The DWP started writing to eligible customers from October 2018. At the top right hand side of the letter they send you there’ll be a reference number either beginning with the letter M or the letter U.

If your reference number begins with an M:

This means you don’t need to do anything. If we supplied your electricity on 8 July 2018 we’ll pay your discount by March 2019.

If another energy company provided your electricity on 08 July 2018 the DWP will send your details to them to pay your discount.

If your reference number begins with a U:

This means that the DWP aren't sure who your electricity supplier is. You’ll need to give the DWP a call (using the telephone number on the letter) and give them your electricity account number and Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN). You'll find the information you need on your electricity bill, so have this handy when you call. But don’t delay, if you don’t call them by the date specified on your letter, you won't get your discount.

I’ve changed supplier, who will give me my Warm Home Discount?

If you're in the Core Group and expecting an automatic discount:

The company that supplied your electricity on 8 July 2018 is responsible for giving you the discount, even if you’re now with another supplier. If we were your supplier and you've now left us you’ll normally get this as a cheque. If you still have a balance left to pay, we’ll put the discount onto your account to help you pay this off.

If you're in the Broader Group and applied to us for a discount:

If you change electricity supplier before we’ve given you the discount, you’ll need to contact your new supplier and see if you can apply with them instead, as their criteria may be different. Unfortunately applications can’t be transferred between suppliers, so you’ll need to make a new application with your new supplier. We won't be able to give you the discount unless your electricity is supplied by us at the time we make the payment.

What happens if I move home?

If you're in the Core Group and expecting an automatic discount:

As long as we were your supplier on 8 July 2018 you'll still get the discount from us. If you still have a balance left to pay, we’ll put the discount onto your account to help you pay it off. If you have nothing left to pay, we’ll send a cheque to your new address. Please make sure you give us your new address, so we know where to send your cheque.

If you're in the Broader Group and applied to us for a discount:

Your Broader Group application is linked to your address and account number on your application, therefore if you move house or switch supplier before the payment is made, your application will be closed. If your new property is supplied by E.ON you will need to reapply using your new address and account number.

How can I find out what benefits I receive?

If you’re unsure of the benefits you’re currently receiving please contact the Pensions Service or Job Centre plus.

What is Council Tax Reduction?

Council tax reduction is a reduction to your Council Tax bill.  You may get Council Tax reduction if you’re on a low income or claiming benefits.  It's not the 25% discount given by Councils to single occupants.

How will I know if you’ve received my application and it’s successful?

If you’ve applied online we’ll send a confirmation to the email address you supplied on the application form. If you’ve sent in a paper application form we’ll write to you within 3 weeks to let you know your application is being processed.

We’ll then write to you again within 12 weeks to let you know if your application has been successful or not. We’ll send you an additional letter if we need to see proof of your benefits.

Who in my house needs to receive the benefits to be able to apply?

If you or your partner are the E.ON electricity account holder and receive the appropriate benefits, you are welcome to apply.

When is the closing date for applying for the discount?

As we deal with applications on a first come first served basis, we don’t know exactly when we’ll close the scheme however in previous years we've closed the scheme to new applicants in November/December. Once we’ve reached a certain number of applications, we’ll unfortunately have to close this year’s scheme.
