Sustainable Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

Proud official partner of Birmingham 2022

The ambition for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was to be the most sustainable edition of the Commonwealth Games yet, leaving a carbon-neutral legacy, the first of any Commonwealth Games. Working with their partners, suppliers, and stakeholders across the region, to reduce their carbon footprint at every opportunity. Emissions that cannot be reduced will be offset principally via the planting of 2022 acres of forest in the Midlands. This project will make a positive, long lasting impact for the people, communities and environment of the region.

On the right track to a sustainable future

We were a proud partner of Birmingham 2022, to be the most sustainable games yet was the goal which is why we chose to partner with them. We applaud the legacy that a sustainable Commonwealth Games will leave for future communities, homes and businesses. We respect their commitment to community projects to improve the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors to the region.

Sustainability pledge

At E.ON, we're passionate about achieving net zero, with many initiatives in place to get us there. So we were delighted to partner with Birmingham 2022 - the first Commonwealth Games to create a carbon neutral legacy.

Bringing people together

E.ON has employees and offices in the West Midlands, so as long-time residents in the area, it was great to see the games create thousands of local jobs, and bring more than one million visitors to the region.

Improving health and wellbeing

Sports and wellness facilities were improved across the Birmingham area. Sustainability through sport is an area we are committed to, as demonstrated by our partnership with E Racing Team, Veloce.

A catalyst for change

Birmingham 2022 helped transform local communities with improved homes, facilities and transport links, and we believe we can help combat climate change by creating sustainable cities across the world.

Birmingham 2022 Queen's Baton Relay

The carefully designed Queen's Baton embarked on its journey through 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth on 7 October 2021. The Queen's Baton was enhanced with cutting-edge technologies including its own 'lungs' consisting of atmospheric sensors with laser technology that analyses the environmental conditions and air quality wherever it is in the world. E.ON have championed the importance of better air quality through our Clean Air and Air Heroes campaigns, so we are delighted that 16 E.ON employees had the honour and privilege to be a Batonbearer in the Queen's Baton Relay.

Green means Go

Green means go: a powerful message of change and hope.

As part of our sponsorship of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, E.ON enlisted the support of Casey Bailey, Birmingham’s Poet Laureate, along with Youth Laureate Fatma Mohiuddin. Between them, Casey and Fatma created Green means Go, a new composition which sends out a powerful message, both of challenge and hope to policymakers and business leaders across the country on why change is needed, and why it needs to arrive quickly. See their message in our video.
