Air conditioning

  • Don’t run air-con all day – temperatures peak in the afternoon, so there’s no need to have air-con running first thing – especially if you ventilate the office overnight to reduce heat during hotter periods.
  • Keep it maintained – regular maintenance and scheduled services will save money in the long run. Make sure the coils, which eject heat from the system, are clean and exposed to fresh air.
  • Control it carefully – the trigger temperature should be higher than the thermostat’s heating, or you’ll end up paying for cooling and heating at the same time!
  • Consider alternatives– a simple desk fan is cheaper to operate than an air conditioning system, and could be a better option for smaller spaces.
  • Keep heat down – the hotter your office gets, the more work your air-con has to do. Using heat reflective materials like window films and paints can help here.
