What is loft insulation?

In any home that has a loft or roof space, insulation is needed to make sure any heat that is built up in the living area doesn't disappear through inefficient layers of insulation. Most homes will already have some insulation up there, but over time its energy efficiency deteriorates, leaving you paying more in energy bills. The different types of loft insulation used are either mineral wool or sheep's wool, which come in either batts (pre-cut sheets) or rolls. Both materials are highly efficient and effective at preventing heat loss.

What is the minimum thickness of loft insulation required in the UK?

The minimum recommended level of insulation is 270 mm. The insulation is used like a blanket to cover your loft or roof space floor, making sure the area between and around your joists is fully covered. When the insulation is laid, all the vents and airbricks must not be covered, this allows for ventilation to make sure your loft stays dry and free from moisture. Professionally installed loft insulation will help reduce your energy bills by limiting heat loss and keeping your home warm.

How much does loft insulation cost?

The typical cost of professional loft insulation is £9302 for a semi-detached house, and depending on your eligibility, we may be able to install it for you for free. We're working in partnership with the government and local councils to deliver free loft insulation to qualifying homes across the UK through green homes funding schemes, where you may be eligible for free loft insulation. These energy efficiency schemes (such as GBIS) are in place to help homeowners and private renters on a low-income or a means-tested benefit improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

Did you know that 25%1 of the heat generated in your home could be lost through your roof if your loft or roof space isn't properly insulated?

Most homes in the UK are insulated, but not always to the recommended level of 270 mm. Your loft or roof space could be a hidden cost to your heating bills, and it can be easily dealt with for free through one of our grants or funding options if you qualify.

Why not see if you’re eligible and start benefiting from:

  2. A warmer, more cosy home
  3. Lowering your carbon emissions
