Buying solar panels - are they worth it?

Solar is one of the world's fastest growing renewable energy solutions and could result in savings of up to £534 a year3 on your electricity bills by installing solar panels and battery storage.

Adding a battery to your solar panel system allows you to store up the power you create to when and how you want, giving you more self-sufficiency from the grid and saving you more money. By combining a solar panel system, battery storage and our Home Exclusive energy tariff you could save up to £874 per year4

As the power generated by solar panels is from a renewable and sustainable source you'll be reducing the carbon footprint of your home and helping to create a greener tomorrow.

Also, by taking steps to making your house more energy efficient you may find that solar photovoltaic panels can provide the bulk of your electricity. In fact, having a solar package installed using our interest-free option could result in savings of £25,860 over 25 years5

How do solar panels work?

Your solar panel system will have a number of solar PV (photovoltaic) cells which capture the sun's energy. Direct sunlight isn't needed for this to happen.

An inverter then converts the energy from the solar cells into electricity for your home. Your home will use this power as you generate it and you'll import any extra you need from the grid.

If you have a battery added to your system you can store up the energy to use as and when you choose.

Which solar energy package is right for me?

To keep things simple we offer three solar PV packages to help you choose a system which is the most suitable for both your home and budget.

All our packages come with a 25 year solar panel performance guarantee and you can be assured we only use the very best solar panels to ensure you get the maximum energy generation in all levels of sunlight.

Also, when you buy a solar package from us you'll get an invitation to use our free and exclusive E.ON Home app, giving you visibility and control of your home's energy and allowing you to see how much energy your solar panel system is generating.

All our hardware and installers are MCS accredited so you’ll be getting a low-carbon energy solution installed to the highest standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you still have questions about solar photovoltaic panel systems, we've provided some more answers below.

If there's anything you're still unsure of, our team of solar experts are available to answer any queries7.

How can I use the energy created by my solar panels?

Solar PV panels work by converting the sun's energy into electricity which can be used in many ways, from lighting your home to powering your appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

If you have an electric or hybrid vehicle and home charger you can use the solar power from your PV panels to charge your car.

How are my solar panels installed?

We aim to install your solar system in a day, plus some time to put your scaffolding up beforehand and take it down after. This depends on the system you choose and your home but we’ll discuss all of this with you before the installation. If you’re just having a battery fitted to your existing solar system it will take less than a day. You can find out more on our solar panel installation page.

Do solar panels come with a warranty?

All our solar PV panels come with a 10 year product warranty and a 25 year performance guarantee.

Can I fit the panels on a north facing roof if I don’t want them on the front of the house?

We can fit solar panels on roofs of all shapes and sizes, however fitting solar photovoltaic panels on a north facing roof may not give you the full benefit of the system.

One of our experts will carry out a survey and will guide you through the best options for you home.

Do I need to be an E.ON gas and electricity customer?

No, you don’t have to be an E.ON gas and electricity customer to buy solar panels from us, they're available to anyone who owns their home and roof.
