How smart home technology can save you money in 2020

The countless innovations in technology over the past few decades have become streamlined and connected by increasingly powerful generations of smartphones, tablets, computers, TVs, and speakers.

More than half of the world’s population is now online, eight in ten people now own or have access to a smartphone and more and more of us are adopting smart speakers. And having access to the Internet as well as the wide adoption of smartphones and smart speakers has led us to embrace smart home tech.

And in fact, we’re become increasing reliant on the Internet and these smart home devices. Smart home technology is not only making our homes more comfortable, entertaining and safe but is also helping us to save money.

What is smart technology?

Smart home technology has been made possible thanks to the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) where everyday objects like sockets and light bulbs are connected to the internet and can also talk to each other and be controlled from anywhere, thanks to the power of smartphones.

And from smart speakers and internet connected TVs to smart sockets, smart meters and smart thermostats, smart home gadgets are constantly innovating to make our lives easier.

Here are some ways you can take advantage of today's emerging tech trends to save energy and money and become more sustainable at home.

Install smart socket and lighting

Smart sockets let you know which sockets, and so which appliances, are in use in your home. You can then save energy by using your smartphone to turn appliances off when they're not needed.

Similarly, smart lighting makes it easy to set different lighting schedules so that lights aren't left on by mistake. For added peace of mind, a smart system can also turn on a few lights when you're not at home to give the illusion someone’s in.

Consider a smart thermostat

A smart thermostat uses your phone's geolocation to save you money by turning your heating off whenever no one's home. And when you're in, it works in the background so your home's always the right temperature. It even checks the weather forecast so it can heat your home more efficiently.

The Bosch EasyControl uses your Wi-Fi to let you manage your home's heating schedule through your smartphone, from wherever you are. You can even control individual radiators in your home if you have central heating, as you can choose to install smart radiator thermostats which replace your current thermostatic valves.

Invest in a smarter boiler

Boilers might not automatically come to mind when we think of smart home technology, but investing in a new, energy efficient boiler can help reduce your energy bills in the long term. Our range of boilers are 94% efficient as standard and we’ve created a short guide to help you find out which boiler is best for you.

What’s more, you can combine your new A-rated boiler with a Bosch EasyControl smart thermostat to really reap the benefits of smart boiler controls, saving you money while making sure your home is always a comfortable temperature wherever you are.

Install a smart meter

Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters. Using a smart energy monitor, a smart meter shows you exactly how much energy you're using, when you're using it, and how much you're paying for it. The meter also automatically sends us your readings each month so we receive your accurate energy readings. This helps to replace estimated billing and puts you in control of your energy use.

Your smart meter will not only help make your home more energy-efficient, but will also help you support the national commitment to reducing energy use in Great Britain. It will even help you keep an eye on your CO2 emissions.

E.ON Next customers can have a smart meter installed for free. We've recently updated our installation processes to make sure we keep both you and our colleagues safe when we visit your home.

Smart home technology can help us all to do our part to move the UK towards its net zero goals – while saving money and gaining control over their energy use. Learn more about how you can save energy and money.
