How a smart meter can help you and our planet

Gill Baker, our Director of Smart Field Connections, shares how smart meters are helping you at home and our planet.

Whether they’re in the back of a cupboard, under the stairs or outside your home, a smart meter is a small but mighty machine which is quietly helping to revolutionise the nation’s energy system one meter at a time, and help you to better manage how you use energy at home, and what you spend which is even more critical as more of us are working from home during this time.

With over 2.5 million of our customers already benefiting from smart meters and as the largest installer of second-generation smart meters (also known as SMETS2) we’re proud to be leading the smart metering energy revolution.

Here are a few reasons why smart meters are a smart move.

Good for your home

Smart meters help you take control of your energy use. Through the helpful smart in-home display unit, you can see how much energy you’re using in near real-time. And you can even set budgets so you know how much you’re spending.

Flick the kettle on and see your costs; flick the lights on and ditto. Pop the heating on and see how much energy you’re using. With visibility over where your energy is being used, you can start to see where you could make savings, either by using less energy or even whether it’s time to upgrade your appliances, lights and so on to better, more energy efficient versions which will help you save on your bills longer term.

This handy little gadget gives you the power and 86% of people with a smart meter have said that they’ve changed how they do things around their home to use less energy.1

With more of us at home during this time, we’re proud to also offer ‘pay as you go’ giving customers the ability to top up their energy meters from home rather than needing to go to a shop. Over the past few months, we’ve also adapted to ensure we can continue to install smart meters for our customers in a way that is safe for them and for our installers. This includes ensuring our installers keep a safe distance, sanitizing surfaces and equipment, wearing appropriate PPE and checking in advance that it is safe to visit each customers’ property.

Good for the planet

While you can’t see energy waste, it is a real and damaging thing for our planet. With an estimated £650m of energy wasted within our system there has never been a more critical time to address this.2

Energy has to travel a long way before you get to use it in your home. By getting a smart meter installed at your property you’re helping to modernise the UK’s energy grid.

With a modern grid, we’ll be able to know where and how energy is being used and be better placed to meet the demands of households across the UK. With a modern grid we’ll be able to rely less on fossil fuels and more on low-carbon, green energy sources.

All our customers’ homes already benefit from 100% renewables backed electricity3 and with a smart meter we can go even further – saving energy and helping us to meet Britain’s 2050 net zero target.

We believe everyone should benefit. From being more aware and taking steps to be energy efficient to understanding how and where energy is being used helping to create a lower-carbon Britain.

We’re proud to be part of the quiet revolution.
