If you're in the Core group, you'll have received a communication from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) who will be arranging your discount. If you weren’t supplied by us on 7 July 2019, your old supplier will be responsible for giving you the payment.

If you're in the Broader group, you will have to apply for a Warm Home Discount. You'll need to meet certain criteria, which can be found in our frequently asked questions. The qualifying criteria can change each year, so please check before applying.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply?

The easiest and quickest way to apply is to click the link above and apply online.

What do I need to do if I am in the Core group?

You should’ve received a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for them to arrange for your payment to be made by your energy supplier. If you weren’t supplied by E.ON on 5th July 2020, your old supplier will be responsible for giving you the payment. You'll need to be the named account holder, or the partner of the account holder, to receive the Warm Home Discount.

How do I know if I'm in the Broader group?

Not receiving the Guarantee element of Pension Credit on 5th July 2020 and either:

  • Born on or before 31 March 1955 and in receipt of Council Tax Reduction for low income (25% single person's occupancy reduction is not eligible)
  • In receipt of the Savings Element of Pension Credit only.

In receipt of Child Tax Credit with a total household annual income of £16,190 or less.

Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (contribution based employment and support allowance is not a qualifying benefit).

Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, with any of the following:

  • A disability or pensioner premium
  • Disabled child premium
  • Child Tax Credit that includes a disability or severe disability element
  • A child under 5 living with you
  • Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP alone is not a qualifying benefit)
  • MATEX or MEDEX certificate.

Working Tax credit with a relevant income of £16,190 or less with either of the following:

  • Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment or a disability element
  • MATEX or MEDEX certificate.

Universal Credit with monthly take-home pay of no more than £1,349 with either of the following:

  • Limited capability for work element (with or without a work-related activity element) OR Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP alone is not a qualifying benefit)
  • A child element (with or without the disabled child element).

How and when will I get the payment?

The payment is made to your electricity account between September 2020 and the end of March 2021. If you have a prepayment meter, we'll send you a top-up voucher to redeem.

Will I still get the payment if I change my electricity supply to another company?

If you're in the Core Group

The company that supplied your electricity on 5th July 2020 is responsible for giving you the discount, even if you’re now with another supplier. If we were your supplier and you've now left us, you’ll normally get this as either a cheque/cash voucher which can be cashed at the Post Office. If you still have a balance left to pay, we’ll put the discount onto your account to help you pay this off.

If you're in the Broader Group

If you change electricity supplier before we’ve given you the discount, you’ll need to contact your new supplier and see if you can apply with them instead, as their criteria may be different. Unfortunately, applications can’t be transferred between suppliers, so you’ll need to make a new application with your new supplier. We won't be able to give you the discount unless your electricity is supplied by us at the time we make the payment.

What happens if I move house?

If you're in the Core Group

As long as we were your supplier on 5th July 2020, you'll still get the discount from us. If you still have a balance left to pay, we’ll put the discount onto your account to help you pay it off. If you’ve nothing left to pay, we’ll send you either a cheque/cash voucher which can be cashed at the Post Office. Please make sure you give us your new address, so we know where to send your cheque/cash voucher.

If you're in the Broader Group

Your application is linked to your address and account number on your application, therefore if you move house or switch supplier before the payment is made, your application will be closed.

How can I find out what benefits I receive?

If you’re unsure of the benefits you’re currently receiving, please contact the Pensions Service or Jobcentre Plus. We can only offer the payment if the E.ON electricity account holder or their partner receives the qualifying benefits. Unfortunately, if you don’t receive any benefits then you aren’t eligible for the scheme.

How will I know if my application is successful?

We'll let you know within 12 weeks if your application has been successful or not.

Where is my Warm Home Discount application pack?

The application pack can take around 7-10 working days to arrive in the post.

As we deal with applications on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, we don’t know exactly when we’ll close the scheme. We don’t want you to miss out, so please complete our online form.
