Power Cut and Electrical Fault Information

Is it a power cut or a fault in your home?

""If your electricity goes off, start by checking to see if it's a power cut or a fault in your home. The easiest way to do this is to see if your neighbours still have electricity.

If they don't have power either, then it's a power cut – and it's our job to make sure your electricity is back on as soon as possible. To tell us about a power cut, please call the Emergency Helpline number on your electricity bill. If you don't have a bill handy, you'll find the number further down this page

If your neighbours have power, then it could be a fault in your home.

  • Your trip switch may have turned itself off. If it has, try turning it back on. If it switches off again then one of your electrical appliances may be faulty. Your trip switch turns itself off to make sure you don't get injured by a faulty appliance. Once you've found the faulty appliance and turned it off, your power should stay on.
  • Do you have a prepayment meter? Perhaps it's run out of credit? If it's in credit and still not working, then please call us on 0345 303 3040.
  • Have you only lost power in parts of your home? You may have a fault with your electrical wiring somewhere, so call a qualified electrician as soon as possible.

As a general rule, if you've lost power because there's something wrong with your electricity supply, such as a power cut or a fault with a prepayment meter, it's our job to fix it. If it's because of a faulty appliance or wiring in your home, it's down to you to get it sorted, but we'll do our best to give you any advice you need.
