Smart meter installations

Getting a smart meter in your home is an easy process that starts with using our quick online tool. Then we’ll need to run an eligibility check, to find out if your home’s suitable.

How to prepare for installation

1. Make sure the meter is easy for the engineer to get to. For example, if it’s behind a locked door or cupboard door, open it up. Make sure the area around it is clear of obstructions.

2. Please try and make sure the engineer has somewhere close to your home to park.

The installation

One of our expert engineers will arrive at your home, at a date and time you choose. We install in line with the Smart Metering Installation Code of Practice (SMICoP) – the industry standard. The installation takes about one hour per meter start to finish, so two hours if you have an electricity and gas meter.

3 simple steps

These 3 steps explain what will happen during your installation:

1. Check

You show us where your meters and gas appliances are. Then we’ll check that your new meter(s) can ‘talk’ to your smart meter in-home display.

2. Install and test

Don’t worry, we’ll only briefly turn off your electricity and/or gas supply while we switch.

3. Demonstrate

Our engineer will show you how your meter works and make sure you’re comfortable with using your smart in-home display. Then we’ll demonstrate by boiling your kettle before we leave, and give you some energy saving advice.

Then you're all set to get in control of your energy use and stay on track with your new smart meter.
