Energy measures that reduce cost and increase profitability

Peter's Food Services Ltd started out as 'Thomas Pies', a small pie factory in Merthyr Tydfil that produced sausage rolls, pies, and pasties that were in high demand throughout the Welsh valleys, in the 1950s. Based in Caerphilly since the 1970's, the business is now a household name producing over 3 million pastries a week.

As one of the biggest employers in the area, serving more than 13,500 consumers annually. It is one of the biggest distributors of cold meats in the UK, with a £90 million annual turnover and more than 900 product lines. Its large 14 acre site means that refrigeration is a significant expense for the business and energy is a constant topic of discussion in board meetings.

We were approached to implement and identify energy saving measures that would in turn reduce operational costs and increase profitability, with a target of £64,000 reduction in the first year.

From energy audits to energy savings

After carrying out a site audit we were able to propose a series of energy efficiency measures that would help Peter’s reach their cost cutting target and reduce their carbon emissions in the process.

Using the latest innovations in cloud-based data analytics we were able to monitor and control their energy in real-time. A full sub-metering system (which included 44 new meters) was installed to monitor performance and identify further energy savings.

A fully comprehensive service

Our energy management services team provided project management support, technical expertise, data analysis, behaviour change initiatives, reporting and regular site visits. Our intelligent analytics software captures and stores energy usage data every half hour to identify potential inefficiencies on customers’ sites, with the capacity to enable significant energy reduction and switch-off measures when necessary.

    Weekly performance reporting and management. This includes the ability to monitor individual production line efficiency across the entire site.

  • Air handling optimisation

    Management and implementation of Air Handling Unit (AHU) optimisation.

  • Air system improvements

    Improvement and rationalisation of the site compressed air system, including waste heat recovery.

  • Steam system interventions

    Efficiency interventions related to the steam system, which includes boiler insulation, operation and steam leak repairs etc

  • LED lighting upgrade

    Upgraded existing lighting with energy efficient LED lighting.
