E.ON and Veloce Racing deliver fun-packed event with green mobility messaging to the next generation

"Both E.ON and Veloce share a passion for driving greater awareness of sustainability and this event was a really positive opportunity to inspire children about a range of STEM themes. Hopefully this sparks a desire for the children to consider sustainability in their day-to-day lives and even perhaps in their future careers."

- Scott Somerville, Chief Marketing Officer at E.ON UK

E.ON has delivered some motorsport magic at its Coventry headquarters,  with a ‘Kids in Motorsport’ event held in collaboration with its electric off-road racing team partner, Veloce Racing

The message of the day for the 60+ eight-to-11-year-olds was that sustainable living can be fun, with activities encouraging team building and collaboration. The format of the day was designed to provide the children with a chance to experience a range of skills and activities which all exist within a motorsport paddock, whilst delivering the message that low carbon motoring and sport is fun and challenging for girls and boys alike.

The children learned about sustainability, coding, resuscitation skills, TV presenting and media expertise, together with the fun of racing in a professional Formula 1 simulator and testing their rapid reactions on a full-sized Batak machine.

Scott Somerville, Chief Marketing Officer for E.ON UK, said: “Both E.ON and Veloce share a passion for driving greater awareness of sustainability and this event was a really positive opportunity to inspire children about a range of STEM themes. Hopefully this sparks a desire for the children to consider sustainability in their day-to-day lives and even perhaps in their future careers.

“Together with our Extreme E racing partner, Veloce, we were able to open the eyes of these youngsters to the wide variety of skills and opportunities across the motorsport world, as well as delivering strong messages around sustainability, the need to take climate action, and equality and diversity which are so strongly reflected in our partnership with Veloce.”

Veloce Racing was also able to introduce other vital careers within the racing paddock, with sports paramedic Jerry Windett demonstrating basic resuscitation skills and Formula One and BBC 5 Live presenter Rosanna Tennant delivering a masterclass in media and TV presenting.

During the event, six ‘skill stations’ were all staffed by experts in their individual fields, with Veloce Racing manning the F1 simulators – teaching racing driving skills – as well as the Batak activity which tests hand/eye co-ordination and stamina; vital attributes for top level racing drivers and sportspeople in general.

The coding and sustainability activities – exercises supporting the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) approved syllabus – allowed the children to perform simple engineering tasks, educating them in the pillars of sustainability in a fun and interactive way.

Veloce Racing was also able to introduce other vital careers within the racing paddock, with sports paramedic Jerry Windett demonstrating basic resuscitation skills and Formula One and BBC 5 Live presenter Rosanna Tennant delivering a masterclass in media and TV presenting.

“It was really fun to work with these children,” said Rosanna. “They’re not necessarily motorsport fans or even have any interest in this world, but it was great to see them learn some of skills of broadcasting and then take the microphone themselves and present to a camera.

“These are skills which transcend the world of television and media and help build confidence and eloquence. This ‘Kids in Motorsport’ concept hopefully opens their eyes to some new opportunities and is a productive way to spend a rainy summer holiday. We might even have a few more motorsport fans after today.”
