"On behalf of all customers I’d strongly urge the Government to continue supporting lower bills and to announce that decision as soon as possible in order to avoid further confusion and distress for customers around whether bills will go up drastically again from April."

Michael Lewis, Chief Executive of E.ON UK

Michael Lewis, E.ON UK CEO, today called for a definite decision from the Government on whether extra support for energy customers would continue beyond 1st April, when average bills are due to rise from £2,500 to £3,000.

Energy bills are currently capped at 34p per unit of electricity and 10.3p per unit of gas for homes across the country – meaning the average home receives a bill of about £2,500 a year. That average bill would rise to about £3,000 under Government plans to reduce support from the start of April.

Michael Lewis said: “At average consumption levels there’s a £500 difference between staying as we are with the current subsidies, or bills rising to reflect the lower levels of Government support announced last year. £500 is a significant increase at a time when customers are already under a lot of pressure financially. We are also seeing the end of the EBSS scheme which gave customers an extra £400 over winter and which further deepens the impact of a £3,000 average bill.

“On behalf of all customers I’d strongly urge the Government to continue supporting lower bills and to announce that decision as soon as possible in order to avoid further confusion and distress for customers around whether bills will go up drastically again from April.”
