E.ON supports its Extreme E female driver for two rounds of the RX2e series in mainland Europe

Molly Taylor hones her race craft in the all-electric RX2e final rounds

On the day that the world was transfixed by the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in Australia, one of that country’s finest sports personalities, Molly Taylor, was a long way from home. The Australian was honing her racing skills in the concluding round of the RX2e championship in Estering, Germany, whilst flying more flags for female sport with support from E.ON and her Extreme E team, Veloce Racing.

The 35-year-old was supported by her team’s Extreme E partner, E.ON, in her quest to gain track miles and race craft in a motorsport discipline new to her.

Molly could not have been in better hands during the race weekend in Germany, as she was mentored by her Extreme E Veloce team-mate, Kevin Hansen, and his father, Kenneth Hansen, the most successful driver in rallycross history with 14 European titles to his name.

The weekend was full of new experiences for Molly, who is a successful rally driver on the world stage and was Australian Rally Champion in 2016 – at the time the youngest person (male or female) to achieve this feat. She has enjoyed prolific success in a multitude of championships and events in the discipline of rallying and off-road racing and won the very first season of Extreme E back in 2021.

However, as the Extreme E series has evolved over the past three years, the format is now more akin to an off-road form of extreme rallycross as opposed to the race-against-the clock discipline of rallying. Molly was keen to gain some experience in this form of motorsport to help her own development as a driver and bring added experience to her Veloce team, with whom she has performed so well since joining at the end of 2022.

“I have to thank E.ON and Veloce for this RX2e opportunity,” enthused Molly. “I had the chance to race in two rounds of this fantastic series in Belgium two weeks ago and now here at this iconic track, Estering, in Germany.

“I have had my fair share of bumps and collisions, as is the nature of this form of racing, and sadly I had an incident in the third heat and the semi final which meant I didn’t graduate to the final. But my times and race craft have really improved from jumping in the car for the first time two weeks ago in a cold and wet Mettet track in Belgium, to today, where my lap times were competitive, and I felt I was able to hold my own. I am now just hungry for more.”

E.ON has a spotless record as a supporter of equality, diversity and inclusion. This support of a strong female competing in a sport - which is still considered male-dominated - on the world stage, is a fine example of putting principles into action and actively creating role models for young girls through sport and competition.

Molly’s performance impressed the #Yellow Squad team, who has run her for the past two events and is led by her Extreme E team-mate, Kevin Hansen.

“Molly takes a very thoughtful and systematic approach to racing and this new discipline threw so many variables at her,” said Kevin. “But she has made good steps forward and has been able to work her way to some competitive racing, which is so hard against these seasoned rallycross drivers.  It has been great to work with her and see her progress. Now we must focus on the next round of Extreme E which is coming up in three weeks and work together as team-mates to win again for E.ON and Veloce.”

The penultimate race weekend of Extreme E is set to take place in September (16-17) and marks a pivotal double-header for the Veloce team, currently third in the standings, as they chase their first championship win.
