Sustainable solutions provider E.ON has been chosen to lead a Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) funded project which will explore how energy efficient heat pumps can be installed in homes across the UK in the most sustainable and cost-effective way.

BEIS’ ‘Heat Pump Ready’ programme is made up of eleven projects in total. For this project, E.ON will work with Newcastle City Council, Northern Power Grid and Clean Air Ventures as they launch the innovative Heatio Energy. Together over the next six months, the companies will be developing the blueprint for installing 750 heat pumps in homes across Newcastle upon Tyne.

The initial phase of the project will investigate how to ensure the electricity network is ready for the widescale rollout of heat pumps, by targeting areas of the city that have capacity for largescale heat pump installations and helping identify areas where grid upgrades may be necessary.

The project will also look at ways to use innovative technology, such as drones and digital lasers scanners, to carry out surveys on homes across the city. This technology will help to reduce the time taken for the survey, as well as improve the accuracy of the data captured, to ensure heat pumps can be designed in the most accurate way for the customer.

E.ON has already installed free energy efficient heat pumps in over 300 homes across Newcastle as part of the ‘Electrification of Heat’ project funded by BEIS.

E.ON and Newcastle City Council will soon begin engaging with communities and residents to identify suitable households who could most benefit from a heat pump installation.
