What are solar panels?
Solar panels are made up of cells that use the sunlight and convert it into electricity. Photovoltaic material within the panels creates an electric field, causing electrons to flow through the panels to generate electricity.
Solar PV gets its name because it's made up of photovoltaic cells that are sandwiched between layers of silicone. If your roof doesn't always get sun throughout the day, modern solar panels can still generate electricity from daylight, although more electricity will be generated from direct sunlight on bright and sunny days.
With E.ON, you're in good hands
We've been installing solar panels for a number of years, helping our customers reduce their energy bills by using renewable energy and becoming less reliant on the energy grid.
We only use qualified experts to install our energy-efficient upgrades who are TrustMark and MCS registered, so you can be safe in the knowledge that your solar panel installation will be done professionally.
Solar panels FAQs
Is the UK sunny enough for solar panels?
The UK gets enough solar energy to make solar panels for your home a beneficial investment, even on overcast days.
The UK receives as much solar energy as warmer European countries, including Germany, a leading solar power generator.
Does solar panel funding cover battery storage?
No, battery storage isn't part of the funding. Find out more about battery storage and how it could help you save even further on your energy costs.
Do solar panels require planning permission
Putting solar panels on your house is called a "permitted development" in the UK. This means that most typical installations do not need planning permission.
If your home is a listed building, a world heritage site, or the installation doesn't follow standard guidelines, you should get planning permission.
Is my roof right for solar panels?
Your home is great for getting solar panels installed. No matter whether your roof faces south, east, or west, you'll still benefit from installing solar panels. A north-facing roof won't get as much sunlight, so it won't be as efficient.
The angle of your roof should be between 20° and 50°.
The legal stuff
† Solar panels and savings are subject to eligibility requirement, geographical restrictions and terms and conditions.
1 Price is based on a 6 Panel “Energise” package (on-roof), fitting to concrete tiles (not slate), single elevation of scaffold, with single-phase electrics, and no complexities, for example installing above a conservatory or digging trenching required for electrics.
2 ThThese are example figures only, based on standardised MCS calculations. Savings are based on property fitted with a south-facing solar array in central England on a roof with a 35-degree tilt and no shading, with electricity consumption of 4,800 kWh per year (with the customer Home all day), at a tariff rate of 24.5p/kWh. The solar array contains 12 x 435W panels (5.22 kWp) generating 4,881 kWh/year, fitted with a 5.1 kWh (5.1 kWh usable) battery.
3 Price is based on a 6 Panel “Energise” package (on-roof), fitting to concrete tiles (not slate), single elevation of scaffold, with single-phase electrics, and no complexities, for example installing above a conservatory or digging trenching required for electrics.
4 Your personal consumption rates and electricity prices may vary from those stated (which are offered as a guide on potential savings you can make). If you receive a quotation from us for a solar panel system we'll give a more accurate figure on savings based on your actual consumption, electricity prices and roof elevation.
5 Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments, are payments for electricity you export to the grid. These savings figures are based on the Next Export Exclusive Premium tariff from E.ON Next of 25.0p per kWh (kilowatt hour) for E.ON Next import-tariff customers who purchase a solar-only solution. For E.ON Next import-tariff customers buying a solar and battery combined package, the Next Exclusive Premium Plus Export rate is 40.0p per kWh.
