Here to help with energy efficiency

With the UK cost of living increasing1, it’s well worth being aware of the support that’s available to help improve your home’s energy efficiency, and reduce your energy bills, particularly for those who are most in need.

An easy starting point is checking whether you’re eligible for energy efficiency schemes that exist to help reduce how much energy you use.

An energy efficient home means using your heating more effectively and avoiding wasted energy, leaving you more money to spend on other things. And if you’re elderly or on a low income and claiming certain benefits, you may qualify for support to help you improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Affordable Warmth

  • Affordable Warmth is a government scheme aimed at encouraging people on low incomes to improve the energy efficiency of their homes by offering free or partially funded energy improvements, for example cavity wall and loft insulation or replacement energy efficient boilers.
  • There’s a range of eligibility criteria to qualify for the scheme and this is linked to your benefit entitlement so it’s worth checking with your energy supplier to see if you could benefit from the funding for the measures on your home.

Green homes funding schemes

  • If you own your home, you may be able to benefit from free energy efficiency improvements on your home through one of the government’s green homes grant and funding schemes
  • The amount you can claim depends on your eligibility criteria, and can be used towards a range of measures, for example insulation (cavity wall, solid wall, underfloor or roof) or low carbon heating, such as solar panels or heat pumps. Some of the schemes are delivered through local authorities so you’ll need to check with yours to see if they can help you improve your home.
  • You can check whether you are eligible through our green homes grant finder.

Warm Homes Fund

  • Your energy supplier may also operate additional initiatives which could help you. Through the Warm Homes Fund, E.ON works in partnership with selected councils to offer grants covering first time central heating systems and connections to a gas supply. This includes a brand new gas boiler, radiators and thermostats, plus insulation in some cases.
  • You don’t need to be an E.ON customer to benefit, but we can only offer this to people whose local authority is signed up to the scheme.
In addition to improving your home’s energy efficiency checking whether you could get help with energy costs, with different schemes funded by suppliers, like E.ON Next, and by the government. For example, you may qualify for £140 towards the cost of your electricity each year under the Warm Home Discount, which is paid for by your supplier.

There are also other schemes that offer extra money to help pay your energy bills. The Winter Fuel Payment is worth between £100 and £300 towards your heating costs and is generally paid automatically by the government to eligible pensioners. Some people may also receive Cold Weather Payments from the government. This is paid automatically into your bank account if you claim certain qualifying benefits and the weather in your area is very cold.
So if you’re in need of some extra help or are a carer for someone who could do with some support, it’s probably worth looking into these schemes and checking your eligibility. And remember, we’re here to help – so if you’re struggling to pay your energy bills at any time of the year, get in touch.
