How long does it take to replace a boiler?

What to expect from a boiler replacement

Having a broken boiler is far from an ideal situation. Nobody wants to be without heating or hot water for any period of time. However, sometimes things happen and your boiler needs to be replaced. If you find yourself in this circumstance, you’ll likely have a few questions.

How often should a boiler be replaced?

Depending on how well they’ve been maintained and how much they have been used, Worcester Bosch boilers tend to have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. For more information on this topic, read our article on how long does a boiler last

How long does it take to replace a boiler?

When it comes to how fast you can get an engineer to come and replace your boiler, it can be from as little as 48 hours1, depending on engineer availability. The boiler replacement itself can be just a few hours, but it depends on the complexity of your situation.

What kind of replacement do you need?

Like-for-like replacements are fastest because all water and gas pipes should already be there so it can take from as little as 48 hours1 from arranging the installation. If you have a combi boiler it can usually be done within a day.

Do you need to change the type of boiler you have?

If you want to switch your boiler type because your needs have changed, installation time may go up by 1-2 days. For example, adding an extra bathroom could mean your current combi doesn’t provide enough hot water to multiple taps at once. In this case, you might think about switching to a system boiler and need a hot water cylinder installed in your airing cupboard.

Do you need to move your boiler?

If you're changing where your boiler is in your home, it will add 1-2 days to your boiler installation. This is because engineers have to re-route the pipework to the new location. If you're moving it to another floor, it can also involve raising floorboard, laying new power and thermostat cables and drilling through walls for the flue.

How long have you had your boiler?

If you’ve had your boiler for a long time your next one might need modern heating controls installed for it to work. This should only add an hour to the installation time and it'll give you greater control of your heating. Smart thermostats let you control your heating from an app, so you can automatically turn your heating off when there's no one at home and track your usage, saving you money on your monthly bills and helping you to be more eco-friendly.

Older boilers might also only have 15 mm pipework while many new boilers require 22mm so you might need new pipework. If the distance from your boiler to the meter is significant, floorboards may have to be lifted to lay the new pipe which can take some time to complete.

What time of year are you trying to get a replacement?

Demand for boiler replacements goes up during colder months and slows down during summer, so it may take a bit longer to book an engineer in the winter. Where you live may also impact when you're able to get an engineer to visit your home; if you’re in a remote location you may have access to fewer engineers.
