Electric vehicle servicing costs

Is maintenance expensive on an electric car? Find out in our guide to electric car maintenance and servicing.

Do electric cars need servicing?

Electric vehicles don't have a combustion engine, which ultimately means there are far fewer things that can go wrong. Although they'll still need to be serviced at regular mileage intervals just like petrol and diesel cars to ensure things like tyres, brakes and windscreen wipers remain in the best possible condition for driving.

Your EV dealer may offer a service plan at their specialised EV service centre so it's always worth checking out what's on offer when you purchase your car.

What's included in an electric car service?

Electric car servicing is not quite the same as servicing a car that runs on petrol or diesel. There's less fluids like oil that need changing and innovations like regenerative braking reduce wear and tear on the brakes meaning that there are less parts and functions that would need to be checked as part of regular service.

Hybrid cars will still require many of the same maintenance checks that  a non electric car would as they still contain a combustion engine.

Do EV's need an MOT test?

Yes because MOT's exist to make sure your car is compliant with the  Government safety and environmental regulations for road worthy vehicles. EV's don't have to adhere to the emissions testing part of the MOT test but you still must begin entering your car for yearly tests once the vehicle reaches 3 years old like with any petrol or diesel powered car.

EV maintenance costs

EV's are not maintenance-free but electric car maintenance, on the whole, is cheaper than maintaining a petrol or diesel vehicle, that's because there are fewer moving parts to maintain. For example there's no clutch or gear box as all electric cars are automatic.

Many mechanics working on fuel powered vehicles in the UK today aren’t adequately trained to work on electric cars. Software, battery engineering and chemicals are words more often associated with EV maintenance than the oil changes, coolant, fan belts and clutch replacements a petrol car may demand. That's why when servicing electric cars it's always key to find a mechanic who is a specialist.

EV charger maintenance

Depending on the purpose of your charger, the maintenance you'll need will be different, but generally home charge point maintenance is as simple as keeping the device clean, looking after your cables and making sure it’s used on a regular basis so you know what normal function looks like.

Public or commercial chargers will occasionally need repairs because they're used more often by a range of vehicles. Some like our chargers, include a 3 year warranty included in the initial price, so you’re fully covered for that period. Our business customers also benefits from a 3 year operation and maintenance package keeping your chargers in tip top condition.

Repairing damaged commercial chargers outside the warranty period can be expensive so regular maintenance of your charging infrastructure should save you money in the long run.

How many years do electric car batteries last?

You may get up to 10 years of use out of your EV's battery before you need to replace it and EV warranties usually last for 7-8 years. Like any lithium ion battery the more the battery is charged the greater the deterioration. But like with your mobile phone battery there's many things you can do to extend your battery life like not filling to max capacity and re-charging before reaching zero. When your EV battery does eventually fail it can be recycled adding to the overall sustainability of your vehicle.
