Annoying, isn’t it? You’re on the way to work and – d’oh – you realise you’ve left the heating on. Now it’ll be on all day, heating a house while no-one’s there.

And what if you forgot to make the changes before going away on holiday? Then the house could be getting a whole week of warmth it doesn’t need.

Every year, Britons waste millions of pounds in energy due to forgetfulness or a lack of control over their energy use.

But thanks to the development of new technologies, that’s ready to change. Companies ranging from energy providers to tech giants are creating smart devices that are putting the power in the customer’s hands. They’re giving them more information, more access and greater flexibility when it comes to things like controlling their heating and hot water.

And that’s where E.ON Touch comes in.

E.ON Touch? What’s that?

We’re glad you asked. E.ON Touch lets you control your heating and hot water – anytime, anywhere. Using WiFi or mobile data and the E.ON Touch app, anyone with the E.ON Touch system can see the current temperature in their home and adjust it. They can also set and change their weekly heating and hot water schedules, no matter where they are in the world.

So if you’re a forgetful sort, and often leave the heating on when you’re out, it could save you a whole heap of hassle. Maybe you’re someone who likes to be prepared – well now you can plan ahead and turn your heating on early so that it’s warm for when you get home. Or if you’re stuck at work or fancy staying out for that extra drink, you can delay the heating so that it doesn’t come on until later. Smart.

Last year, the Energy Saving Trust published findings that showed worried pet owners spend an extra £78 million a year on energy to give their pets the creature comforts they deserve. But by using a smart thermostat like E.ON Touch, you could keep the temperature just right.

The power is in your hands…

It’s not just a one-way conversation though. Not only can you check and change the settings, E.ON Touch will talk to you too. It’ll keep a daily log and monthly report to help you track how much heat you use. And through hints and tips, you can look at how you could save money on your energy bills too.

But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s also highlight some common misconceptions. Whilst the system puts you in control, it won’t make your home heat up any quicker, or increase the temperature of your water tank (that’s set by your cylinder thermostat). And you can’t control individual radiators, just like you can’t with your central heating control at home.

Are other systems available?

There are indeed. As mentioned earlier in this article, the benefits of smart thermostats are recognised by lots of different companies. Why do we like ours? Well, while E.ON Touch has a lot of the same features as other systems, it also has the added benefit of daily and monthly reports designed to help you see where you could be saving money. And our system can also compare the number of hours you have used your heating and hot water, to give you an estimate on the potential cost or savings you have made.

Should you be worried about security issues?

With great control comes great responsibility. We take data security seriously. When we collect your data, we make it clear to give you the peace of mind you deserve.

So how can you get one?

You need to be an E.ON customer and if you haven't already, you need to register for an online account. You can have E.ON Touch installed for £199.99, which can be paid as a one-off payment or across four instalments. You should have a gas boiler and a single heating system (so if you’ve got more than one thermostat for different parts of your home we won’t be able to install it for you), and home broadband with a spare port on your router.
