Home upgrade grant explained

Working in partnership with local authorities, we're able to support low-income households that don't use a gas central heating system with energy efficiency upgrades.

What exactly is the home upgrade grant (HUG)?

HUG is a government initiative that'll deliver up to £700 million in funding between 2023 and 2025. It will provide successful local authorities with funding to improve homes in England with energy-efficient upgrades and low-carbon heating. Helping towards the 2050 net zero targets set by the government.

E.ON then works in partnership with these successful local authorities to install energy-efficient improvements in homes with low incomes and EPC ratings that don't use gas as the main way to heat their homes. This is where a home's main source of heating is either electricity, oil, coal, or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) bottles. The goal of HUG is to make homes more energy efficient and cheaper to run.

Start benefiting from what HUG has to offer

Keep your home cosy

Don't let all the heat you build up in your home escape. Keep nice and cosy with home insulation for your roof, walls, and floor.

Save on your energy bills

Reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills with insulation, solar panels or an air source heat pump.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Not only will your house be cheaper to run, but you'll be reducing your carbon emissions, helping to create a lower-carbon future.

Energy efficient improvements from HUG

Depending on where you live in the country, there are a number of different energy-efficient improvements you could qualify for. You could get cavity wall, external wall or loft insulation, solar panels, or a new heating system powered by an air source heat pump.

HUG funding through E.ON

To qualify for funding, you'll need to either claim one of the listed means-tested benefits or have a household income of £36,000 or less. The property doesn't have central heating as its main source of heating, and it has an EPC rating of D or E if you rent your home or D to G if you own your own home.

In some areas, household income will not be considered as part of the qualification, so please apply, and our online eligibility checker will confirm if you're eligible for funding.

Find out your home's EPC rating to see if it will qualify.

If you qualify for funding, we'll perform a home survey of the property to make sure we can install any eligible upgrades.

What benefits are covered by HUG?

If you're claiming one of the following means-tested benefits, you could be eligible for funding:

  • Child Benefit
  • Child Tax Credit

Help your landlord to help you

If you're a private renter and you qualify for HUG, you'll need to gain permission from your landlord before any improvements can be made to your home; they'll need to contribute a third towards the cost of the energy-efficient upgrades. Once you gain permission, you can start your energy-efficient journey towards reducing your annual energy costs and creating a more warm and cosy home.

If you're not eligible for HUG, there are a number of other energy-efficiency grants and schemes that you might qualify for, so try our online grant finder and check if you're eligible.

Are you a landlord?

If you'd like to learn more about how these upgrades can improve the energy efficiency of your rental property and reduce its running costs to make it more desirable to tenants, just take a look at our HUG for landlords page.

HUG FAQs

Can anyone apply for HUG?

You'll need to either own your own home or privately rent it. You'll also need to live in England and be off the gas network. That means you don't have central heating installed, and you get your heat from electricity, oil, coal, or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) bottles. A broken boiler doesn't qualify for funding from the HUG scheme.

Which energy-efficient upgrades will I be offered?

Improvements will be offered to you based on your local authority's guidelines. When we come to do your home assessment, we'll be able to let you know which improvements your home will be eligible for. Your landlord will then agree on which upgrades they would like to have installed.

Do I need to pay for anything?

No there is nothing to pay if you meet the eligibility criteria for the scheme, and a retrofit survey is completed identifying the energy efficiency improvements your home needs. For landlord information please visit HUG for landlords.

Will I qualify if I live in social housing?

Not for this grant, but you could be eligible for funding through the ECO4 scheme or the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.
